Durham Region

Durham Region

Stretching northwards from the Lake Ontario shoreline to as far as Lake Simcoe, Durham Region comprises many of Toronto’s eastern suburbs. Pickering, Ajax and Whitby all offer charming suburban living experiences, with family-friendly communities and easy access to recreational areas and amenities being the norm. While it has in recent years become more of a bedroom community for the Greater Toronto area, Oshawa maintains its identity as a distinct city. With a historic downtown core and a new urban core rising along Highway 2, many new resale units are being made for sale in the area. Further east, Bowmanville boasts a charming downtown along Highway 2, while its neighbors Courtice and Clarington offer living experiences that are more suburban and rural, respectively. To the north, while the communities of Uxbridge and Port Perry are within commuting range of the rest of the Greater Toronto Area, resale units available for sale there are largely designed to appeal to buyers looking for an escape from city life – while still enjoying easy access to urban amenities. Finally, the town of Beaverton lies at the northern edge of Durham Region. Nestled along Lake Simcoe, it is firmly part of Ontario’s cottage country, with a living experience to match.

Transportation in Durham Region

The Lakeshore East GO train line serves Pickering, Ajax and Whitby before terminating at Oshawa GO/VIA station (with VIA trains providing service to Kingston, Montreal and Ottawa). While towns to the east are currently served only by buses, the Bowmanville GO extension will bring rail service to eastern Oshawa, Courtice and Bowmanville. Frequent GO bus service to a variety of Greater Toronto Area destinations is available along Highways 401 and 407. For local transit needs, Durham Region Transit operates a robust bus network, with the Pulse express bus service operating along Kingston Road from Oshawa into Scarborough. Finally, drivers can take full advantage of the presence of Highways 401, 407, 412 and 418.
